Pay on January 15, or file early instead?

If your 2026 return is filed and paid by Feb 1, 2027, the January installment is not required. Three questions tell you whether that route suits you.

What to do

Pay by Jan 15, 2027

  • Without a return filed and paid by Feb 1, 2027, the January installment is due on Jan 15, 2027 like any other.
  • Skipping it and paying everything on Apr 15, 2027 costs at most $77.67: $4,500 for 90 days at 7%, the latest announced rate carried forward. It is a ceiling, because the penalty only reaches the part that was due as your fourth installment.
  • If you can pay part of it, do. The penalty is charged on the amount short, so every dollar paid by Jan 15, 2027 shrinks it.

The safe harbor

Pay at least 90% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax, whichever is smaller, across the four installments, and no underpayment penalty applies whatever you owe in April. The prior year figure is 110% if your 2025 adjusted gross income was over $150,000.

Questions answered.

Do I have to make the January 15 estimated tax payment?

Not if you file your 2026 return by Feb 1, 2027 and pay the entire balance with it. The IRS treats that as covering the fourth installment, so no penalty applies to it. Otherwise the January 15 payment is due like the other three, and skipping it starts the underpayment penalty on that date.

Why is the deadline February 1 and not January 31?

The rule says January 31, and January 31, 2027 falls on a Sunday, so the deadline moves to the next business day. The 2026 Form 1040-ES gives the date as February 1, 2027.

Is filing early worth it?

It saves one payment and lets you pay the exact amount instead of an estimate. The cost is the rush: clients have until the end of January to send 1099 forms, and a return filed without one of them usually needs amending. If your income comes from a few clients who send forms early, it can work well. If it comes from many, paying on January 15 is the calmer route.

What does skipping the January payment cost?

Interest at the underpayment rate on the part of what you owe that was due as the fourth installment, from January 15 until you pay. At 7% a year, $4,000 left unpaid for the 90 days to April 15 costs about $69. It is not a disaster, but it is money spent on nothing, and it grows with the amount.

What is the safe harbor, and does it change this?

Pay at least 90% of your 2026 tax or 100% of your 2025 tax, whichever is smaller, across four on time installments, and no underpayment penalty applies whatever you owe in April. The 100% becomes 110% if your 2025 adjusted gross income was over $150,000. If your first three payments already add up to your full safe harbor for the year, the January payment is optional and the rest is due with your return.

Can I pay the January installment late instead?

Yes, and a late payment still helps. The penalty runs only until the day the money arrives, so paying on February 20 costs less than half of what waiting until April 15 would. The estimated tax penalty calculator shows the exact figure for any date.
