Free tool, 2026 tax year, California

California quarterly tax calculator for freelancers.

California taxes freelance profit at nine rates from 1% to 12.3%, starting from your federal adjusted gross income. It also asks for most of the year's estimated tax by June, which catches out anyone who assumes the state follows the federal rhythm.

California has not published its 2026 brackets yet. FTB's own 2026 Form 540-ES worksheet tells you to estimate 2026 tax with the 2025 tax table and the 2025 exemption credit, and this page does exactly that. The standard deduction shown is the 2026 figure from the same worksheet.

Safe harbor and deduction limits

Optional. Last year's figures unlock the prior year safe harbor tests, which are often the smaller number you can pay without a penalty.

Form 1040, total tax line. Leave at 0 if 2026 is your first year owing tax.
Your 2025 California return, tax after credits. Leave at 0 to use only this year's test.
Used for both the federal and the California high income tests.
Leave at 0 if you have no payroll. Only matters once your taxable income passes the qualified business income threshold.

Your next estimated payments

$15,034

Federal, due Jan 15, 2027

$2,202

California, due Jan 15, 2027

Each is what you still owe for the year, split across the deadlines still ahead, with California weighted by its own installment shares.

Next federal payment $15,034, due Jan 15, 2027. Next California payment $2,202, due Jan 15, 2027.

Federal safe harbor $11,800 per payment

Pay at least $11,800 across the year, a quarter of it by each deadline, and the IRS underpayment penalty cannot apply. Based on 100% of last year's federal tax, which is the lower of the two tests.

Some 2026 deadlines have already passed. A quarter of that total was due by each one, so a quarter paid late can still carry a penalty; paying now stops it growing. See what it costs.

California safe harbor $1,982 per payment

Pay at least $1,982 across the year, on the California installment dates, and the California underpayment charge cannot apply. Based on 90% of this year's estimated California tax. Add last year's California tax below to see if that test is cheaper.

How California is different.

California estimated tax, 2026

California taxes income at nine rates from 1% to 12.3%. These are its 2026 estimated payment dates. If one falls on a weekend or holiday, it moves to the next business day.

2026 payment dates

  • Apr 15, 2026: 30% of the year
  • Jun 15, 2026: 40% of the year
  • Sep 15, 2026: nothing due
  • Jan 15, 2027: 30% of the year

What changes in California

  • Payments are uneven: 30% of the year by April 15, 40% by June 15, nothing on September 15, and the last 30% on January 15, 2027.
  • Safe harbor is 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's, rising to 110% if your 2025 California AGI was over $150,000. At $1,000,000 of 2026 AGI the prior year option disappears.
  • A personal exemption credit of $153 per person comes off the tax, shrinking by $6 for every $2,500 of AGI over $252,203 (single).
  • No qualified business income deduction: California does not follow the federal 20% deduction.
  • A 1% Behavioral Health Services Tax applies to taxable income over $1,000,000.

Questions answered.

Why does California want 40% of my estimated tax in June?

California front loads estimated tax. 30% of the year's required payment is due April 15, 40% on June 15, nothing on September 15, and the final 30% on January 15, 2027, so by mid June you are expected to have paid 70%. The calculator weights the California payment by those shares, which is why it can be much larger or smaller than the federal one on the same day.

Which California figures does this use for 2026?

The 2025 California tax rate schedules and the 2025 exemption credit of $153 per person, plus the 2026 standard deduction of $5,706 single or $11,412 joint and head of household. That is exactly what FTB's 2026 Form 540-ES worksheet tells you to use, because California indexes its brackets for inflation after the year has started.

Does California allow the qualified business income deduction?

No. California does not conform to the federal section 199A deduction, so your California taxable income is built from federal adjusted gross income, before that deduction is taken. The federal half of this calculator still applies it.

What is the California safe harbor for estimated tax?

Pay the smaller of 90% of your 2026 California tax or 100% of your 2025 California tax and the underpayment penalty does not apply. The 100% becomes 110% if your 2025 California AGI was over $150,000, and once your 2026 AGI reaches $1,000,000 only the 90% current year test is allowed.
