Free tool, 2026 tax year, Colorado

Colorado quarterly tax calculator for freelancers.

Colorado taxes income at a flat 4.4%, and unlike most states it starts from federal taxable income, so the federal standard deduction and the qualified business income deduction already flow through. Higher earners add some of that back, and the addback grows sharply in 2026.

Safe harbor and deduction limits

Optional. Last year's figures unlock the prior year safe harbor tests, which are often the smaller number you can pay without a penalty.

Your 2025 Colorado return, tax after credits. Leave at 0 to use only this year's test.

Your next estimated payments

$15,034

Federal, due Jan 15, 2027

$1,821

Colorado, due Jan 15, 2027

Each is what you still owe for the year, split across the deadlines still ahead.

Next federal payment $15,034, due Jan 15, 2027. Next Colorado payment $1,821, due Jan 15, 2027.

Federal safe harbor $11,800 per payment

Pay at least $11,800 across the year, a quarter of it by each deadline, and the IRS underpayment penalty cannot apply. Based on 100% of last year's federal tax, which is the lower of the two tests.

Some 2026 deadlines have already passed. A quarter of that total was due by each one, so a quarter paid late can still carry a penalty; paying now stops it growing. See what it costs.

Colorado safe harbor $1,275 per payment

Pay at least $1,275 across the year, on the Colorado installment dates, and the Colorado underpayment charge cannot apply. Based on 70% of this year's estimated Colorado tax. Add last year's Colorado tax below to see if that test is cheaper.

What changes in Colorado

  • Above $300,000 of federal AGI, you add back any standard or itemized deduction over $1,000 single or $2,000 joint. For 2023 to 2025 those limits were $12,000 and $16,000.
  • Above $500,000 of AGI ($1,000,000 joint), the whole qualified business income deduction is added back, a rule HB25B-1001 made permanent.
  • Safe harbor is 70% of this year's tax, 100% of last year's, or 110% of last year's if your 2025 federal AGI was over $150,000.
  • The rate has been temporarily lowered in some years when state revenue exceeded its limit. 4.4% is the rate on the 2026 DR 0104EP.

Questions answered.

Why does Colorado start from federal taxable income?

Colorado law defines Colorado taxable income as federal taxable income with some additions and subtractions. So the federal standard deduction and the qualified business income deduction reduce your Colorado tax too, unless your income is high enough to trigger an addback.

What changes for high earning freelancers in Colorado in 2026?

If your federal AGI is over $300,000, the deduction addback limit falls to $1,000 single or $2,000 joint for 2026, so almost the whole federal standard deduction is added back. Above $500,000 single or $1,000,000 joint, the qualified business income deduction is added back as well.

What is the Colorado safe harbor for estimated tax?

The required payment is the smaller of 70% of your 2026 Colorado tax or 100% of your 2025 Colorado tax, which becomes 110% if your 2025 federal AGI was over $150,000. That 70% current year test is lower than the federal 90%.
